The Christmas and New Year season is a time of giving, so we have put together a short list of suggestions for those looking for organizations and ministries to support. There are countless churches, organizations, and ministries partnering with God for the sake of the Kingdom. These are some that West University Church of Christ partners with directly.
Arms of Hope is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Christian care organization that assists children and single-mother families in need. Arms of Hope’s facilities include Medina Children’s Home (60 miles northwest of San Antonio) and Boles Children’s Home (40 miles northeast of Dallas). The facilities have over 150 years combined experience in comprehensive residential care programs for children. Arms of Hope also reaches disadvantaged children in their own neighborhoods in various communities with its Outreach Ministry programs. During every Christmas season, West U. Church of Christ provides gifts for children and moms at Arms of Hope.
CCSC is West University’s local non-profit organization serving inner-city Houston. The mission of the Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) is to serve the poor, hungry, disabled, and otherwise needy while respecting their religious, ethnic or cultural differences. CCSC was created out of faith, and founded in the belief that we are called to help all God’s children heart to heart and hand in hand.
CCSC is an invaluable resource for helping people out of poverty and homelessness. CCSC’s services include a food pantry for emergency relief, a vocational training program for low-wage workers, and a program helping provide corrective lenses to children with vision problems. The Christian Community Services Center is an ecumenical organization and is supported by the majority of churches in West University.
The Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort immediately responds to any major disaster in the continental United States by sending truckloads of emergency food, water, cleaning, and other supplies to be distributed to all disaster victims in the disaster area through a local Church of Christ. They are currently giving aid to the regions in Tennessee affected by wildfires, including the Gatlinburg Church of Christ, which was destroyed in the fire. Church of Christ Disaster Relief sent a truck load of goods and supplies to Houston in the wake of the Memorial Day flood in 2015.
Impact Church of Christ is a church and non-profit organization that serves Houston through several inner-city ministries, from children’s mentoring programs to a living center for people in recovery. Impact also partners with the Houston Food Bank to provide food and household goods to financial insecure families. Impact’s mission is to “bring the love of Jesus Christ to the poor, the rich, the sad, the happy, the uneducated, the educated, every color and every race.” West University is a proud partner of Impact; families regularly participate in their children’s mentoring program and volunteer to provide meals. We also work together to help friends in need find a path out of poverty and homelessness.
Impact is in the middle of its “Double Our Impact” fund-raising campaign, meaning every dollar donated until January 1st will be matched dollar-for-dollar. Click here to make a donation.
Missions Resource Network is an organization that helps equip churches–primarily Churches of Christ–send and support missionaries and mission work. Their mission is to “help churches make disciples of Jesus Christ all over the world.” They do this by mobilizing God’s people to participate in disciple-making, equipping churches to make disciples worldwide, preparing disciples for disciple-making (missionaries and mission partners), and caring for missionaries who are at work making disciples to ensure healthy and effective ministry.
Missions Resource Network is an important ministry partner. They help us see the worldwide nature of the church and invite us to participate with Christians all over the world in disciple-making. Their work includes ministry among churches in the Mediterranean and Middle-East.
If you would like to make a gift to WUCC, you can do so using our online-giving portal. Your gifts help ensure West University Church of Christ continues to grow as a community of Christ in the neighborhood of West University and the city of Houston. It’s through the generous partnership of our members and friends that we have the resources available to minister in our community. You can also use the online giving tool to set up regular contributions for 2017.
This list is only meant to be a small list of suggestions. There are many ministries that need our love, prayers, volunteer time, and financial support. Our hope is that this list provide the perplexed with some direction and inspire productive generosity.
