What We Believe

We believe that God is three persons in a perfect unity of love and relationship. They are one essence in three persons, “the Trinity”: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit.

We believe that God the Father is the Creator of heaven and earth (Genesis 1). He is holy, majestic, powerful, and loving. God is the King of Creation, and he is at work reconciling creation to himself.

We believe that the Son is the agent of creation, and that he became flesh as Jesus of Nazareth. He was the Christ sent to live among humanity and teach us about the will of God, to die for our sins, and to be resurrected so that we might all have the opportunity for eternal life.

We believe that humanity is created by God: created in the image of God to be in relationship with God. Yet through our sinfulness we reject a relationship with God. Sin is the willful rejection of God in favor of our own desire and will. Sin damages our relationship with God, with one another, and with creation. Through our sinfulness death enters the world. And there is nothing we can do about it. We cannot be good enough, smart enough, or talented enough to overcome the effects of sin.

We believe that God overcame the consequences of sin through Jesus (Romans 8:1-4). Through his death on the cross, Jesus defeated the power of sin. He bore our sins and our sorrows, and by his wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:4-5). And through his resurrection, Jesus defeated the power of death. Jesus extends salvation and life to anyone who will believe.

We believe that we can connect to Jesus’ death and resurrection through faith and baptism. Baptism, immersion in water, is our joining with Christ in his death and resurrection (Romans 6:1-7). We confess our sins, submit to our Savior, and receive the Spirit (Acts 2:37-38, Romans 10:9-10).

We believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in the world, convicting people of sin and their need for salvation. The Spirit is given as a Counselor and Guide to Christians. He is a seal of God’s ownership and the foretaste of heaven. He wells up to eternal life and makes us a new creation. The Spirit intercedes in our prayers and reminds us we belong to Christ (Romans 8:26-27). The presence of the Spirit bears fruit in our lives: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

We believe that God calls us into community with other believers (Acts 2:42-47). The Church is made up of unique individuals, each one different yet united through faith in Jesus (John 17:20-23, 1 Corinthains 12:12-14). The Church is the Body of Christ on earth, continuing Jesus’ work of preaching and teaching, providing help and wholeness. God uses His Church to extend his message of grace, hope, and reconciliation to the world.

We believe that West University Church of Christ is an imperfect church serving a perfect God.

We believe we are placed here in this community to be salt and light to those around us, extending God’s love and grace through our words and actions.

We believe that God loves you! He knows you, cares for you, and wants you to know him. And we want to help you know God more deeply.
